Freshmeat top 20 projects

Freshmeat Top 20

Programming Projects

Here are some of the programming projects that people, no: I mean geeks actually--not actual, real, human people who sleep, shop, and eat, but precision codemakers, persuading the computers that are turned on to slave away at our commands, as they keep chittering away against our {comments}.

Now discover what coding dilemmas they're talking about, working on, pondering over, grappling with, worrying about, checking syntax of, writing for pay, making it rich with mystical language of computer-talk.

It takes {what seems to be} one to know one.

I learned how to work with images on GIMP, and it will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks to GIMP I was able to teach myself a sellable skill and then break into graphic arts production. That led to my current work in publishing.

The masses of mostly nameless nerds who toil away at open source software and let the "rest" of the world have it for free are my heroes. After all, not everyone can afford to keep up with the latest release of Quicken or Office or Photoshop. Especially as its benefits apply to less affluent parts of the world, this kind of work that unix geeks do is downright noble. Yet few people are aware of the existence of that community!

For a certain client, I work with a Unix-based SCO Open Server Release 5. One thing I like about it is the fact that there's no manual, which restricts access, while it lengthens the learning curve.

I like it when one must know and follow commands, like a soldier, rather than "navigate", like a sailor.

Not that there's anything wrong with being a sailor.

Information wants to be free.

soldier and sailor :o) interesting

Thanks Zaf. Nice image in the comment form, is that you?

Zafufilia said...

Yeah that's me (plus a little fairy dust). The effect is produced through an online tool at the university of st andrews. It's interesting -- it will let you see your face with features from other racial types, the opposite gender -- even an older or younger you. Evidently they do research on facial features.

steven edward streight said...

Zafufilia: So...it's not you, it's you plus a whole bunch of racial archetypes and age ranges and gender obfuscations, which combine to render the image a "not you".

You remain nebulosity in A minor.
